Economics of Livestock Diseases

Introduction to this Website
This website contains spreadsheet models for estimating the 'direct costs' and wider (economic) impacts associated with 35 different endemic diseases of farm animals in Great Britain. The models were developed as part of a research project undertaken by the Department of Agricultural and Food Economics at the University of Reading and funded by the Department of the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) of the United Kingdom.

For each of the 35 diseases, there is a spreadsheet model, supporting notes explaining the assumptions, calculations and parameter values within the spreadsheets and a report on the data available concerning the disease in Great Britain. Spreadsheets (and supporting documentation) can be downloaded so that you can input your own assumptions or values into the models.

Comments and suggestions concerning any aspect of the models are welcomed.

A copy of the final report (pdf) is available for download. A report containing further details of the human health aspects of the diseases (pdf version) is also available for download.

Working paper 'The Value of Badger Populations and Control of Tuberculosis in Cattle' (pdf version) by Richard Bennett and Ken Willis is available for download.

We would like to acknowledge the veterinary and epidemiological input from Kathy Christiansen and R.S. Clifton Hadley of the Epidemiology Department of the Central Veterinary Laboratory (VLA) at Weybridge.
